How To Use Medication
Follow your doctor's instructions exactly. Do not start, stop, or change your dose on your own. How and when you take Xanax depends on your condition and your treatment plan. Some people take it at specific times of day. Your doctor and pharmacist will tell you what applies to you.
1. What is the dose of Xanax?
Take the tablet as directed. It can be taken with water. Follow any specific instructions from your healthcare provider. If your symptoms do not improve the way you expected, do not take extra doses. Talk to your doctor instead.
2. May I need to swallow Xanax with food?
Generally, Xanax can be taken with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, ask your healthcare provider whether food helps. Follow all directions for use as given to you.
3. What things must I stay away from?
Avoid alcohol while taking Xanax. Alcohol increases drowsiness and can cause other serious effects. Tell your doctor and pharmacist about every medication and supplement you take, especially anything that causes drowsiness or affects breathing. Do not combine Xanax with other sedating medications unless your healthcare provider specifically says it is safe.
4. What do I do if I miss a dose?
Follow your healthcare provider's guidance on missed doses. Never double up to make up for a missed one unless your doctor told you to. If you are unsure, call your doctor or pharmacist.
5. What about overdosing?
Do not take more than your prescribed dose or take two doses close together. An overdose can cause extreme drowsiness, confusion, coordination problems, slowed breathing, or loss of consciousness. Get emergency medical help immediately if you think you or someone else has taken too much.
6. What If I feel sleepy or dizzy...
Xanax can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and reduced alertness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything that requires full attention until you know how the medication affects you. These effects are stronger when combined with alcohol or other sedating medications.
Important
Do not give Xanax to anyone else, even if their symptoms seem the same as yours. It was prescribed specifically for you. Never stop Xanax suddenly without advice from your healthcare provider. Stopping abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about your dose, how to take it, side effects, or whether it is safe with other medications you take.
Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions for taking Xanax.
